Employers often wish to investigate job candidates further before hiring them. For this reason, they frequently ask job candidates to provide contact information for people who can attest to their character and abilities. When selecting references, make sure that:
- You have their permission--never list someone as a reference without talking to him/her first.
- They will only say good things about you--never list someone as a reference who will speak badly about you in any way.
- They know to expect a call--contact your references immediately
after providing their contact information to a potential employer.
