McKinstry: Is the Women's Equality Act the beginning of the end for the IDC?

State Sen. David Carlucci speaks with the media

In a show of support for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, Rockland Democrats are blasting one of their own: New York Sen. David Carlucci. They’re particularly peeved at the Independent Democratic Conference's role in blocking the governor’s Women’s Equality Act from being voted on.

They’re calling Carlucci a sellout. It's this kind of hardball pressure tactics that just might force the Senate to have...

McKinstry: Keep taxpayer-funded pension data public

If we lack specifics, it’ll be impossible to

If sunlight is the best disinfectant then why do some New York lawmakers want to shut out its rays?

A bill that would clarify precisely what it means to be a state retiree – those collecting a taxpayer-funded pension – is being block by Republicans in the State Senate (It was approved in the Assembly). This legislation would actually clarify what it means to be a “retiree” versus a “beneficiary.”

Why...

McKinstry: How long can Sheldon Silver stay in power?

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) talks to reporters

The New York State Senate has a not-so-subtle message for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver: Time’s up.

The Senate passed a bill on Monday that would cap at 12 the number of years that a lawmaker could serve in a leadership post in the legislature.

Although there was no mention of Silver in this internal term-limits proposal, Senate members admit it was an obvious dig at the embattled...

McKinstry: A price for Independence nod in Westchester County

Dr. Giulio Cavallo, chairman of the Westchester County

In his bid for re-election, Rob Astorino didn't get the Westchester Independence Party's nomination for county executive. It went to Democrat Noam Bramson.

No big surprise there.

That party's boss, Giulio Cavallo, endorsed Astorino in 2009, but soon after became disenchanted with the Republican. Now, as Cavallo was doling out endorsements this week, he's saying that Astorino is too far...

McKinstry: Yonkers bickering is no way to represent the city

Yonkers City Hall (May 30, 2012)

There was a turncoat, an Oscar award and a vote so confusing that politicians were left scratching their heads -- even after several intermissions.

The Yonkers City Council held a special meeting on electoral redistricting Monday that no lawmakers should be proud of -- that is if they actually know what happened.

In fact, the four-hour carnival ended with no resolution. It was a pathetic...

McKinstry: As work starts on Tappan Zee Bridge, the real question is tolls

A rendering of the new Tappan Zee Bridge

As the barges arrive and work trestles are built on the Hudson River, it's clear the $3.9-billion replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge means jobs.

But just how many remains to be seen. Will it be as many as 45,000, as Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has said, or just enough to scrape together a softball team? Maybe we should split the difference?

A recent four-page state report concluded that the...

McKinstry: Board of Elections doesn't enforce New York's campaign finance laws

Voting at the Northport City Hall voting location

When it comes politicians breaking the rules, it’s much worse than you think.

And I'm not talking about the seemingly endless parade of perp walks or corruption charges levied against state lawmakers in recent years.

It’s about New York’s campaign finance system – and the state Board of Elections mostly nonexistent enforcement of the laws.

There were 103,805 violations of New York’s...

McKinstry: Don’t take your eyes off Ken Jenkins

Ken Jenkins attends the Westchester County Democratic convention

Before losing the Democratic nod to run for Westchester County executive, Ken Jenkins gave a rousing speech.

He was clear, focused and inspired.

He was part preacher, part politician, and didn’t fumble around for words or speak in circles. In all my years covering county government, it was the best I’ve ever seen Jenkins.

Before a crowd of roughly 2,000 Democrats at the Westchester...

McKinstry: HUD controversy looms over 2013 Westchester campaign

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino speaks during a

Much of Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino's fourth State of the County address Tuesday night sounded like his others: He pledged another year with no tax increase, touted his plans for changing Playland and outlined his efforts to promote business and spur economic development — all while protecting social services.

And there were shout-outs to county residents who accomplished great...

McKinstry: Greg Ball's torture tweet a glimpse of his brash act

CNN host Piers Morgan, left, and New York

State Sen. Greg Ball has dug in his cowboy boots and is defending his belief that  the use of torture on the Boston bombing suspect would be justifiable — the suspect he called "scumbag number 2" in a tweet sent to his more than 5,000 followers.

It's the tweet that set off this latest Ballapalooza.

"Who wouldn't use torture on this punk to save lives," he wrote,...
