McKinstry: Westchester Legislators meet despite Hurricane Sandy

The Westchester Board of Legislators meets despite Hurricane

With Hurricane Sandy upon us, Westchester residents can take comfort in knowing the Board of Legislators is hard at work.

The board held a meeting this morning and passed a law requiring the county to have an inventory of its portable generators as well as those owned by municipalities throughout Westchester.

The vote was unanimous, but you’ve got to wonder how many lawmakers asked this...

Filler: The thrill and dread before a hurricane like Sandy

The Long Island Sound, shot around 10 a.m.,

In Smithtown Monday morning it was largely a tale of two storms.

Where I live, on Route 25A, and on the main roads such as Jericho Turnpike, there were stiff but not alarming winds, on-again, off-again rain and a little traffic. It was inclement and dreary, but it didn’t feel dangerous.

But a few miles north, on the actual shore of the Long Island Sound, an epic weather event was clearly...

Bessent: Hurricane Sandy offers pause from a very ugly campaign

Former New Hampshire governor and former chief of

Hurricane Sandy has forced a time-out in the increasingly nasty presidential campaign.

Sandy-anticipation has essentially shut down the New York City region and much of the East Coast. But to borrow a cliché, “It’s an ill wind that blows no good.” The consequences of the storm are yet to be assessed, but for now, the public could use a break from this mean-spirited race as it enters the homestretch.

Dolman: Hurricane Sandy and an evacuation order from New York City

People line up looking for taxis as they

The instructions sounded clear enough to me.

“Earlier today, I signed an order for a mandatory evacuation of homes and businesses in Zone A—low-lying coastal areas of the city,” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Sunday.

Zone A? That would be us. An automatic email from the NYC Office of Emergency Management reiterated the point. A robocall from Con Ed said the company might...

Driving home from a trip to Syracuse this evening, we passed four convoys of white and orange bucket trucks, which were clearly heading toward southeastern New York to prepare for the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy.

The trucks are equipped with cherry-picker lifts, which are perfect for lifting crews to disentangle tree limbs from power lines and perform other needed repairs.

The Asplundh...

McKinstry: Bid for Westchester exec is early, and others will follow

Bill Ryan (D-White Plains) speaks at a press

Westchester County Legis. Bill Ryan, a Democrat from White Plains, says County Executive Rob Astorino has no real plan for the county -- except maybe to slash programs like child care, parks and infrastructure.

In blasting the county executive earlier this week, Ryan, a former chairman of the Board of Legislators, said he wants Astorino’s job. The tea party approach to government won’t work...

Dolman: Hurricane Sandy threatens to turn Pearl St. into watery ghost town

Metropolitan Transit Authority workers lay plywood over subway

I live one block west of Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan, a fact that only matters on weekends like this, when a hurricane somewhere in the Caribbean threatens to blow us around like loose rigging on a schooner.

Pearl was once at the city’s waterline — filled with docks, slips, ships, cargo, chandlers and swearing sailors. Today it’s about three blocks from the East River, thanks to four centuries...

Misinformation: The U.S. has cut its operating oil refineries in half

MISINFORMATION: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

A recent letter to the editor called out “an unaddressed serious energy problem” for the United States that had not been mentioned in the presidential debates. The problem, according to the writer: ”Years ago we had 300 operating oil refineries in the United States. That number has been reduced by half, and in the last two years, three additional...
