Legendary college basketball coach Bob Knight, expressing his disdain for the media, once said most people learn how to read and write in the third grade, then find something better to do. Will Sammon hasn't. A Queens native, Will joined Newsday as a sports web intern in 2012. A couple of months after his internship concluded, he joined the high school sports team.

Will has a diverse background in journalism, with experience covering education, politics -- yes, he was trusted with that -- minor league baseball and high school sports.

St. Dominic senior R.J. Beil recorded the 250th point of his career Monday on an assist to Grant Galligan 10 seconds into a non-league win over Portledge.

After scoring five goals with two assists in the 13-5 road win, Beil’s total points is now up to 256, which “easily ranks him in at least the top-five in the program’s history,” according to third-year head coach Matt O’Brien.

Shoreham-Wading River senior Tim Rotanz became the fourth player in Long Island high school boys lacrosse history to total at least 400 points Thursday when he scored a goal during the third quarter of a win at Rocky Point.

Rotanz scored six goals and six assists in his team's 18-6 Division II win.
