When Mary Drago got word that her friend had died, she rushed to the family home and was understandably distraught.

Courtney Syrett consoled her. Somehow.

It was Marianne Syrett, Courtney’s mother, who had passed just two hours before, succumbing at 52 to leukemia.

But there was Courtney, with an arm around her field hockey coach and providing the reassuring words.

1. Sachem East (7-0) The Flaming Arrows look unstoppable, and they very well could be. Sachem East won its three games last week and outscored opponents 15-0. The standout victory, of course, was the 5-0 drubbing of East Islip on Thursday. Next game: Oct. 2 at Ward Melville 2. Manchenko leads Hills through tough week unscathed

Half Hollow Hills boys volleyball passed its biggest test of the season thus far, and made its case to be considered Suffolk’s best team. And with that, Miller Place’s missed opportunities in the second half no longer mattered. With that, the Panthers’ pre-season seed no longer mattered.

With that, Miller Place earned a 1-0 overtime victory against Rocky...

Field Hockey: Solid as a Rock

Bay Shore field hockey defender Haleigh Rock shows

Not quite Marshawn Lynch’s “Beast Mode” grill, but that’s pretty cool. Haleigh Rock gets a +5 for mouthpiece flair. (For anyone who hasn’t watched “Office Space,” go ahead and search “pieces of flair.”)

And the Bay Shore defender is solid as a Rock... literally.

Her older brother, Griffin Rock, was a star football and lacrosse player at Bay Shore, and last spring received the...

St. Anthony's upsets nationally ranked MLK

St. Anthony's entered the season with little experience and lost a few players to the U.S. Soccer Academy, but has lots of talent. The talent is coming to the surface and the Friars are quickly evolving into an excellent team.

St. Anthony’s pulled off a big upset by knocking off nationally-ranked Martin Luther King (Manhattan), 2-0, at Belson Stadium today.

Brendan Reardon and Joe Busuttil...
