The final week of conference play is upon us. As teams continue to jockey for playoff seeding and spots we look at the players who made a huge impact on their teams second to last series of the seasons during the week of April 29-May 5.
Alec Chiappone, Locust Valley
Chiappone keyed Locust Valley’s two wins over BC-I rival Wheatley – he scored the winning run in the top of the sixth of...

Let’s start things off right: Shoutout to Sayville’s Liz Koehler and Gina Palumbo, seniors who scored their first goals of the year on senior day. Way to be clutch (and make it memorable). Now, off to the races… Vanessa Costantino, West Islip – I wanna stick that extra ‘n’ in her last name every time. Ms. Costantino scored the winner with eight seconds left in the first OT in the Lions game win...

The Garden City Maroon girls golf team completed yet another undefeated season last week, finishing 10-0 in Conference II for its 11th straight conference championship. The team has won 106 straight conference matches with its last loss coming in 2003. After losing three of his top golfers to graduation, coach Reid Sclafani wasn’t sure how this year’s team would fare. The girls exceeded his expectations,...

As always, email me or @StephenHaynes4. Now, let's get right to it.
Katherine Zisis, Roslyn: In one of the more touching sports-related scenes you’ll see, Zisis, a senior with pulmonary stenosis and development disability, scored a goal in her first varsity appearance on Saturday. When the Tewaaraton Award watch list was paired down to 25 last week, Duke attack Kerrin Maurer was stunned to see her name.
“It was a dream just to play in college, but I never thought I would make that list, let alone in my sophomore year,” the former St. Anthony’s star said of being a candidate for the award given to the NCAA lacrosse players of the year. “It’s a huge honor, but definitely...

Getting tired of CHSAA finals between St. Anthony’s and Chaminade? Too bad. The two rivals will go head-to-head in a championship match in a seventh varsity sport this season on Monday, when they square off in the CHSAA tennis final at Hofstra. St. Anthony’s, the No. 1 seed led by defending CHSAA singles champion John D'Alessandro, went undefeated in league play and knocked off No. 4 Kellenberg...

Dinner at the Fehrenbach house may have been a little awkward on Thursday night.
Earlier that day, father and daughter became three-hitter and the opposing manager trying to get her out. Daddy’s little girl came out victorious as Kayla Fehrenbach helped lead the Bethpage softball team to a 9-4 win over MacArthur, which is coached by her father Bobby Fehrenbach.
The two have played against...

Noel Lent is as versatile a player as there is on the Longwood softball team for coach Jackie Legnon. Lent is currently 5-1 and shares the pitching...
