Mandela was an iconic figure for his fight against apartheid in South Africa. Active with the African National Congress (ANC) during the 1940s and 1950s, he was arrested several times. In 1963, after being initially charged with treason, he was tried for sabotage and conspiracy and imprisoned for the next 27 years.
