Make Your Own Trading Cards!

Love playing Trading Cards? Come meet creators from the Art Way Alliance. Two of their artists will teach you how to make your own cards and design your own game! As a participant, you’ll learn how to:    Use the basics of drawing and character design to create your own character Develop a character with special powers and spells Recognize what makes a card game “work”

Dream Catchers

Learn the lore behind this traditional Native American craft while making your own dream catcher that reflects your unique style and sensibilities. Classes will be held Aug. 5, Aug. 12, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26. We recommend attending 2-3 sessions to complete your dream catcher.

Join your Southeast Neighborhood Library to celebrate the start of Summer Reading!  10 a.m. to 12 p.m.: All ages can enjoy hero-themed crafts and activities, plus snacks and a superhero photo booth 11 a.m.: Hero story time for families with children ages 0-8.

Basketmaking Workshop

Pass a pleasant Sunday afternoon learning how to make a basket. Materials and instruction will be provided by a local artisan. Registration is requested but not required. Please email if you would like to participate.

Bikes + Knitting

Brush off your knitting needles and join us as The Knitty Gritty Committee (Southwest Library's very own knitting circle) celebrates National Bike Month! David Quick of Southeast Neighborhood Library and resident knitting aficionado extraordinaire will be on deck to highlight different knitting patterns you can use to spruce up your bike, including a pattern that has the D.C. flag on it! Free. No registration required. Knitting needles are available to borrow.

Join us for a basic bike maintenance workshop with mechanics from Capitol Hill Bikes. Learn repairs that you may not have even known that you could do yourself! The May 23 workshop will occur at Southeast Branch Library at 403 7th St. SE The May 30 workshop will occur at Northeast Branch Library at 330 7th St. NE

Reupholstery 101

Learn the basics of DIY reupholstery from local artist and fiber expert Claire Harper. During the day, Claire creates in-store and window displays for home and clothing shops; in the evening, she creates art and reupholsters furniture. This workshop will review and demonstrate some basic steps of reupholstering from stripping and fabric choice to sewing and stuffing. By the end of the workshop you’ll feel prepared to tackle your own project at home!

National Poetry Writing Month Workshop

In this fast-paced, fun-filled workshop with local writer Hannah Sternberg, students will play collaborative and independent writing games to unleash their creativity. Using word games, pass-the-pens, unique prompts and selected readings, students will explore the expressive possibilities of poetry.
