U.S. Senate

Protestors hold banners against the purchase of F35 fighter jets by the Italian Senate on July 15, 2013. Italy's ruling coalition averted a split over a motion to scrap its purchase of 90 Lockheed Martin F35 fighter jets by agreeing to seek parliament's approval before going ahead with further spending on the program. Italy plans to spend 11.8 billion euros ($15.43 billion) on the jets over 45 years, starting in 2015 as the deal includes maintenance contracts for state-controlled defence group Finmeccanica, as Italy's aerospace industry is a development partner in the F35 project and Italy has already invested about 2 billion euros in it. Italy is among nine countries are involved in developing the F35 with Canada, the United States, Britain, Netherlands, Australia, Norway, Denmark and Turkey.

About U.S. Senate

The United States Senate is the upper house of the bicameral United States Congress, the lower house being the House of Representatives. The composition and powers of the Senate and the House are established in Article One of the Constitution (which does not use the terms "upper" and "lower"). Each U.S state is represented by two senators, regardless of population. This ensures equal representation of each state in the Senate. U.S. Senators serve staggered six-year terms. The chamber of the United States Senate is located in the north wing of the Capitol building, in Washington, D.C., the national capital. The House of Representatives convenes in the south wing of the same building.
