Shanel Anthony is a lifelong resident of the Petworth neighborhood.

Growing up in Washington instilled a sense of service and giving back to the community at an early age.  As a child, I recall volunteering at my church, Martha’s Table, Catholic Charities and other local soup kitchens to feed the less fortunate.  My commitment to service continued as I attended DeMatha High School which further instilled the importance of service, mandating community service.  I matriculated to Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island and achieved my undergraduate degree in Marketing and my MBA in 5 years.

Today I am at Medtronic, the world’s largest medical technology company, which started as an internship I uncovered in my University Library.  After graduation, I returned to Washington and furthered my healthcare career, but also sought involvement in my community.  At that time, I successfully pursued a write-in campaign to fill a vacant Advisory Neighborhood Commission seat.  During my five terms as ANC, I served as Treasurer, Chairman and derived the satisfaction of improving the neighborhood I grew up in.  As a commissioner, my contributions led to more affordable housing, healthier eating options, improved recreational facilities and most importantly, a renovated Petworth Library.

Helping to transform Petworth Library as a commissioner, was one of my proudest achievements. As an ANC Commissioner, I was engaged in the task of budgeting, engaging community members and other tasks.  Additionally, my professional experience as a Regional Manager for Medtronic, where I am responsible for a $30 million region and 10 employees, has contributed to my financial management, forecasting and leadership skills.

Lastly, as a new father, I see now more than ever, the importance of making sure all kids in our city can succeed, and the role the library can play in their development and success.  The library has many great resources and does so much good, I just want to contribute in making sure ALL residents know how the library can impact their lives.
