The Passport Acceptance Office, located on the 2nd floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, is happy to help you apply for a new passport or renew your current one. Details on application process are below.

Passport Application Process

How to Apply for a New Passport

  1. Complete the application and PRINT (single-sided) prior to arrival.
    1. Free Printing, copying, and scanning is available at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
  2. Visit the Passport Acceptance Office on the 2nd floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. 
    1. All applicants must be present.

Please bring each of the following with your application:

  • Bring two checks (per applicant), one written to the U.S. Department of State and one written to the D.C. Treasurer. Forms of payment accepted are personal checks, cashier checks, money orders, or business checks (no starter checks). See fee structure below. 
  • Proof of ID - valid driver's license, state ID card, military ID, passport.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (must be original documents - no photocopies). U.S. birth certificate with parent(s) name(s) and official seal OR naturalization certificate OR previously issued passport.
  • Color 2" x 2" passport photo with white background for each applicant (photos can be taken onsite for a fee).

If children are getting passports, also bring:

  • At least one parent listed on the birth certificate/adoption papers/legal guardian court documents, a notarized consent form and a copy (both sides) or non-appearing parent's ID.
  • For 16 and 17-year-old applicants, only one parent needs to be present, along with birth certificate/adoption papers. A notarized letter is not required.

How to Renew Your Passport

Your Passport is Eligible for Renewal if:

  • Your passport was issued within the last 15 years.
  • You were over 16 at the time your passport was issued.
  • Your legal name has not changed.
  • You can provide proof of legal name change.

  • Bring two checks (per applicant), one written to the U.S. Department of State and one written to the D.C. Treasurer. Forms of payment accepted are personal checks, cashier checks, money orders, business checks (no starter checks). See fee structure below.
  • If the name you are currently using differs from the name on your most recent passport you will need an original marriage certificate or court order with the official seal of the issuing authority, indicating the change of name.
  • Color 2" x 2" passport photo with white background for each applicant (photos can be taken onsite for a fee). 

 

NOTE: Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met. Check the US Dept. of State's Country Information page to learn about entry and exit requirements for the country or countries to which you are traveling.

File Search Fee $150

You may request a file search instead of submitting evidence of U.S. citizenship if: 

  • You have been issued a U.S. passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad in the past, and 
  • You cannot submit it with your application 

The file search fee is $150 and charged in addition to the normal application fees, payable to the U.S. Department of State. Please complete the Request for a File Search and include it with your application.

If you are planning to travel within 72 hours, you will need to apply in person at the Washington Passport Agency. You must call 877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment. The address is 600 19th St. NW, First Floor – Sidewalk Level, Washington, D.C. 20006.
